Well. I'm a big fat liar. I know I said that I wouldn't post again until after finals but I have come to realize that sometimes I need to walk away from my work and relax.
So today's plans are for decorations.
D can get all kinds of free lumber from the lumber yard at work. We'll find some simple, sweet sayings to paint on the wood and hang 'em up around the farm. How sweet to have words you believe in surround the whole party. They could easily double as a great photo prop with the photographer. Oh, their life isn't over after the wedding. No, no no. Some pieces can find a way into our home and hung on walls as c h e a p art and reminders of the promises we made.
How freakin' amazing are these? The first time I looked at them I couldn't even tell what the heck they were but I knew I loved them. Turns out they are just strips of crepe paper attached to hoops. I like the impact they make and the bright bursts of color.
I saw this tutorial awhile ago and fell in love. If we do the crepe paper windsock idea, I'm thinking we will dye our own crepe paper, too. Since we probably won't be rocking the all-over-the-color-wheel look like the decorations above (which are rockin, bee tee dubs), we'll keep the look more in our tones of yellows, greens, and blues.

When D saw these, he laughed. Really. He agreed that they looked good but... really? Bottle. String. Stick. But to me, these prove that somethings are more than just a sum of their parts. Also helps that when I look at these, I see as close to f-r-e-e as possible. We can save some of the beer bottles/wine bottles from around home and see if they look alright. String? piece'o'cake. The question really comes down to what we would put inside of them. Maybe a single bloom matching somewhat in our color scheme. More research to come, of course.
I have loved pennant flags for as long as I have been wedding-prowling. (I refuse to admit when that started, muuuuccchhh too embarrassing.) Just to make the project easier, the fabric will be cut with pinking shears (big fat WHOOHOO to not having to sew finished seams) and will use string as the base of the flag. I've seen some tutorials that use bias tape but basic string will reduce the cost of the project and I don't think will make that big of difference. We still need to figure out exactly how long the flag will need to stretch which will affect how much fabric we buy. I'm thinking of keepin' up with the mix-matchery of our theme and just collecting pieces of fabric in the right tones over time. I see the usage of lots of 40% off JoAnns coupons in my future. :)
This may be my favorite project. Well... the favorite for right this second. Going back to the free lumber part, directional signs are definitely on our list. One aspect I have always hated at weddings is not being sure where I am supposed to go for what. We'll make up some sweet signs that point out the way for our guests to the reception, the ceremony, the campfire, and the washroom.
Once I am done with finals, we will focus a little bit more on concrete aspects like getting closer to a guest count, planning some specific budget limitations, and a good long list of projects. I can't wait until I can actually share a DIY project with you!
What are your favorite party decorations? Any suggestions for stuff you think would fit right in for our home-sweet-rustic backyard farm wedding?
